Hazardous Areas Classification
The Blue Book
The new edition of the Design, Construction, Modification, Maintenance and Decommissioning of Filling
Stations (the Blue Book) has recently been issued. The new book gives updated guidance on the requirements
for Fuel Stations and includes guidance for areas previously not detailed in the original book.
Of particular interest to Xmo Strata are the revised hazardous area zone classifications and this bulletin aims to
give you an understanding of the new classifications.
Hazardous Zones
Hazardous areas are classified into zones depending upon the frequency and duration that a flammable
atmosphere could be present:
Zone 0 That part of a hazardous area in which a flammable atmosphere is continuously present or present for
long periods.
Zone 1 That part of a hazardous area in which a flammable atmosphere is likely to occur in normal
operation.
Zone 2 That part of a hazardous area in which a flammable atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal
operation and, if it occurs, will exist only for a short period.
Any area outside of the above zones is defined as non-hazardous.
Hazardous zones are identified on drawings using the following shading convention:
