PPE
When purchasing PPE it is important that it is to an appropriate standard in order to ensure it is fit for
purpose and gives adequate protection.
There are European standards for each type of PPE, and all purchases must ensure that any PPE
purchased complies with these standards.
Hard Hats
European standard EN397 describes minimum protection for hard hats. The standard requires a helmet
to pass mandatory tests including protecting the wearer against the unlikely occurrence of a top dead
centre impact. There are additional options within EN397 including for products that offer side impact
protection - abbreviated as LD (lateral deformation).
It is recommended that Centurion Connect hard hats available from Arco are purchased. These are
standards compliant helmets suitable for use on construction sites and have the added advantage of a
wide range of accessories available, such as hearing protection, visors and chin straps.
Boots
Safety Footwear is now governed by a European safety standard which forms part of legislation, it is
therefore imperative that safety footwear is purchased from a reputable source and carries the fixed
European standard mark EN 345.
Boots to EN345 have a safety toecap providing protection to 200 joules impact. In addition they have
also passed a compression test and the upper material is of a certain quality and thickness which provides
a level of abrasion resistance.
The sole compound is also tested for heat resistance, abrasion, shock absorption, and its resistance to both
oil and certain chemicals.
