Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 543

                                                  24 November 2016

                                                    HSE Statistics

The HSE have recently published their 2016 statistics and there are some surprising results.

The feedback from our employee safety days and from our clients is that the sites we work on are safer than they
have ever been, BUT only this week we learnt of an employee death at an oil refinery; I can almost hear our guys
saying “that’s abroad and we work much safer in the UK”, but the HSE statistics indicate that deaths at work in the
UK actually increased from 142 to 144, ill health cases increased from 1.2 million to 1.3 million and days lost
increased from 27.3 million to 30.4 million.

If we analyse the estimated cost to the UK industry, fatalities cost £221 million, injuries sustained at work cost £4.68
billion and the biggest cost by far is ill health at an estimated cost of £9.38 billion.

So, what can we do about it?

Well, identifying potential hazards on site and either making them safe or notifying others so they can address them
is the biggest influence that our site teams can have.

We’ve already been focussing on health related issues and have made some procurement changes to the equipment
we source, conduct pre-start medicals and ongoing screening for those deemed as ‘at risk’ employees and some new
initiatives will be developed and shared as part of our 2017, Q1 HSSE Awareness week.

Please continue to identify and make safe hazards and we welcome any further suggestions you may have, especially
       relating to employee health.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has bee n learned
throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual presentations, and some by
reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo
Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep
       you well informed!
