Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 403

Construction Industry Accident Statistics
According to the Building Safety Group the number of accidents in construction has fallen by 17% in
st
st
the last quarter (1 November 2013 to 31 January 2014).
They also report that there was a 25% fall in injuries sustained by moving, flying or falling objects, and
a 20% drop in the number of injuries while handling, lifting or carrying.
The Building Safety Group put this drop down to an increased focus during thematic site inspections.
Although good news if true, the latest official statistics from HSE show there were still 39 fatal injuries,
1913 major injuries, and 3133 over seven day injuries in the construction industry in 2012/13.
Our biggest risk is us being ‘asleep at the wheel’, so use of Last Minute Risk Assessments is critical to
ensuring that we aren’t one of the statistics reported on above. Please continue to be vigilant and
address hazards at source to protect yourself, other contractors, site patrons and our customers.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
