Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 558
09 March 2017
ExxonMobil Q1 Safety Letter
Please see enclosed safety letter, shared with us by ExxonMobil.
The incident discussed in this letter was previously described in our bulletin 555 (http://xmostrata.com/manual-
handling-5/)
Last minute risk assessment is essential to the control of manual handling and trip hazards. Where possible we
provide mechanical aids for lifting operations, but it is not practicable to eliminate all manual handling or all trip
hazards on site. Always walk and assess the route before carrying any significant load through that route, remove
trip hazards where possible or divert the route around them. Team lifting must be used for heavy, bulky or awkward
loads. If you have any suggestions as to how manual handling can be further reduced or made safer, contact your
line manager.
Since 2004 we have had ten incidents reported that relate to manual handling, three of these reports resulted in an
injury, four were near-misses and only three were potential incidents. This indicates that PI’s as a result of manual
handling are under-reported. We encourage everybody to think about how you carry out manual handling operations
and report any PI’s related to this. If you see somebody carrying out manual handling operations incorrectly, a
positive interventions may save them from a significant injury.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has bee n learned
throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual presentations, and some by
reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo
Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep
you well informed!
