Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 537

                                                   13 October 2016

                                                      Wind Speed

Due to a recent Potential Incident where a crew had
to stop work at height due to the wind gusting
above 24mph, we would like to remind you of the
need to assess weather conditions and check
       forecasts before starting work.

The recommended maximum wind speed to be
working from a MEWP is 24mph, and from a
mobile scaffold tower it’s 17mph. These speeds
are documented on our JSA’s and in our site rules.
       Remember these are recommended maximums,
and site specific conditions may mean these should
be risk assessed and reduced for specific tasks.

All crews have anemometers, and they must be
used before work starts and periodically throughout the task. If the wind speed is gusting close to the maximum,
consider stopping work until the wind speed is calmer. If you need to lift panels, think about how you lift them to
prevent them becoming a sail and if the wind speed is gusting over the maximum, stop work immediately and contact
       your line manager.
