Manual Handling Injury – Lessons Learnt
On 5 April an Xmo Strata engineer was moving a crate of ridge capping weighing circa 100kg that had
th
been delivered to site on a curtain sided vehicle by a supplier.
Despite the JHA advising that the load must be split, having attended a manual handling course the
previous week and receiving a manual handling HSSE bulletin 3 weeks previously (on 10 March), a
th
decision was made between him and the delivery driver to lift the load slightly and drag to move its
position; the engineer took some of the weight of the load purely to help move it slightly to the desired
location. The delivery driver pushed as one end was lifted. It moved slightly quicker than the engineer
had anticipated and put pressure him and he felt a pain in his lower back.
He then decided to sit and have his lunch break early and rest for 30 minutes, after this period he said
the pain felt worse he then decided call the office and attend doctors to have it checked.
He was given Anti Inflammatory tablets and when home. He had attended a manual handling course the
week before and participated in H&S training the next day, after which he returned to site to work.
