Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 033
S Martin – 30 January 2007
Smokefree England
st
On 1 July 2007, England follows Scotland to become “smokefree”.
From this date almost all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces in
the country will become smokefree. These will include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars,
public transport and work vehicles that are used by more than one person.
This law will also mean that indoor smoking rooms will no longer be allowed.
st
From 1 July, we, as employers will need to display the legally required signs at entrances to
our premises at Marden and Telford, and on all vans that are (or could be) used by more than
one person. Those who fail to display the signs (on offices or work vans), or actively smoke in
either may be liable to a fine or prosecution. So anyone wishing to smoke will have to go
outside instead.
The evidence against second hand smoke is clear. It causes lung cancer, heart disease and
other illnesses, and triggers asthma attacks.
The good news is that it’s estimated that smokefree places will save thousands of lives over
the next decade. Smokefree will help the 7 out of 10 smokers who want to quit, too. But most
of all, it will help create a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone to visit or work in.
The van signs will be despatched to lead installers in due course and the positioning and
ongoing compliance will be checked as part of our regular audit procedure.
“let’s make sure that we continue to make our sites THE SAFEST by helping ourselves, our colleagues,
our customers and even our competitors by improving training, helping where necessary and
addressing any issues of concern there and then”
