Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 031
S Martin – 30 November 2006
Health & Safety Violations
As you are aware, BP’s attitude to Health & Safety is first class and my experience is that we, as a
company have always been encouraged to ‘raise the bar’ and have worked hard to continually
improve our systems of work and safety practices as a direct result of the encouragement and
recognition offered by the Global Alliance at their awards presentations and newsletters.
th
Despite their clear commitment to Health & Safety, on Tuesday 28 November, it was reported in The
Times that “BP is facing fines of about $384,000 (£198,000) from a safety regulator in Indiana after
violations at its Whiting Refinery. Health & safety inspectors cited eight “serious” violations, ranging
from inadequate safety documents for workers to failing to test fire hydrants. (Dow Jones) “
Each and every Xmo Strata and Xmo Veritas employee has now been given access to our new safety
manual, written specifically around the procedures that we adopt to make our sites as safe as
possible, and has been given an individual toolbox talk relating to near miss spotting and reporting,
supported by the Remember Charlie Safety DVD.
As discussed at our individual meetings, to simplify the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, we (as your
employer) are obligated to provide you with a safe working environment, adequate training, and safe
working procedures; you (as employees) are obligated to take reasonable care for the safety of
yourself and of other persons who may be affected and follow the safety procedures laid down.
The fine issued to BP demonstrates that the HSE are committed to saving lives and will not hesitate to
take action against any offenders if necessary, whether they be large Blue Chip companies, small
businesses or individual employees.
Please make sure that you read the manuals issued, comply with the procedures therein and most
importantly, ASK if you need clarification on any points or see anything that you feel is unsafe.
“let’s make sure that we continue to make our sites THE SAFEST by helping ourselves, our colleagues,
our customers and even our competitors by improving training, helping where necessary and
addressing any issues of concern there and then”
