Generally, I am pleased with the detailed information that some of our teams are recording;
however, two areas require more attention:
Positive and negative comments – we ask for these to be recorded because we do a lot of
things well and you should be acknowledging this to the person you are auditing. On every site
I have visited we do some things really well, but there are always areas in which we can
improve – no site is 100% safe and none of us are 100% perfect. The negative comments are
also important as they encourage us to think outside the box; if you can do things better others
can too – we can all learn from each other.
100% safe? – Many of our peer on peer audits don’t pick up anything wrong. This isn’t a
blame exercise; it is designed to encourage on-site discussion to identify where the risks are
and how we can work even safer. We want you to find things wrong and tell us what you did,
or what we can do to reduce the risk to you and others working around you.
We are making good progress and are identifying more hazards and addressing them at source
than ever before; please keep up the excellent work.
If we all take note of the two areas outlines above, I believe that we can make 2010 our best
ever year.

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
