Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 194
S Martin – 10 June 2010
Line of Fire
Recent observations on site have identified that many contractors, including our employees (and me)
often arrive on a live site, put on their PPE and walk across the forecourt to sign in.
Whilst wearing a high viz vest and safety helmet make us more visible and therefore reduce our
chances of being run over, PPE should be the last line of defence i.e. if you walk around the site
perimeter when navigating a site, the chances of being struck by a moving vehicle are considerably less
than cutting across it; walking around the perimeter AND wearing PPE reduces the risk even further
and is a policy that we should ensure is implemented at the time of signing in, and when crossing a live
site during the works.
This bulletin will be used as a toolbox talk by our supervisors and the next version of our F1.3.1 site
audit form will focus on this area specifically so we can identify whether we have a higher risk of harm
and measure any improvement we make in this area.

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
