Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 176
S Martin – 4 February 2010
Ceiling Collapse
Please see enclosed self explanatory bulletin from Global Alliance which does not relate
to a job that Xmo were involved with, but is very pertinent to the works we are
undertaking for some customers.
In the last year, our work in this area has escalated considerably because of more
customer emphasis on saving energy. Our “in store” remit, over and above forecourt
work has included replacing internal shop lights with LED lamps, fitting motion
detectors and project managing the fitting of LED refrigeration lighting retrofit fridge
doors to save energy, fitting energy saving sun tubes and in some cases replacing the
existing ceiling.
Analysis of our own near misses identifies not only the hazard identified by the GA in
this bulletin, but also unsafe wiring, loose transformers that fall out when the tiles are
removed and old uni-struts and redundant components being left in the ceiling void.

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
If you have any queries regarding the Safety Bulletin content or require further information please
contact any staff member of Xmo Strata Ltd.
