Occupational Exposure to Petroleum Vapours on Petrol Forecourts
After an issue of vapour exposure was raised by one of our employees, comprehensive
surveys have been commissioned by the Global Alliance to measure the exposure to
petroleum vapours of crews whilst carrying out work near fuel pumps.
The surveys were carried out at three service stations whilst we worked on site, the sites
were:
Ford Service Station, Welshpool Road, Shrewsbury
Malthurst Service Station, Longton Road, Stoke on Trent
Roseville Service Station, Wolverhampton Road Tipton.
The monitoring, was undertaken over the period of 19th November 2004 - 4th March
2005 by International Occupational Health Limited (IOH). It was carried out during all
painting and “swoosh” application processes, at a number of specified areas, on several
dates.
Where appropriate, Personnel Monitoring was also undertaken. This is relevant for the
evaluation of airborne exposure to the operatives involved in the application of the
painting and swoosh application.
In general, exposure levels were very low. However, traces of several chemicals were
found at the sites.
The following table shows the percentage of each chemical found during the monitoring
and compares it the government defined maximum exposure limits. Exposure limits are
defined in two ways, the average exposure over an eight hour period (8 hour TWA), and
the average exposure over a fifteen minute period (15 min STEL).
