Unloading Delivery Vehicles
Feedback from site has instigated us to investigate the unloading procedure for delivery
vehicles; in particular, access to and egress from the backs of high sided trucks and the
manual handling of the loads.
We are currently in negotiation with one of our suppliers to try to reduce the required
manual handling of loads, particularly with regards to MID adaptor plates which are one
of the heaviest items that need to be moved.
We are also talking with a potential supplier of dedicated ladders, who are in the process
of designing a prototype ladder that clamps onto the truck side and provides safe access
to the bed.
More than 2000 serious injuries to people falling from vehicles are reported to HSE each
year. Many of these injuries are broken arms or legs, resulting in weeks off work and
possible loss of earnings. There are probably many more injuries that are not reported.
