Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 321
20 September 2012
Overloaded Electrical Outlets
Please see enclosed self-explanatory bulletin that was shared with us by Johnson Controls.
Overloading extension leads is a common problem, and is a major source of fires.
According to latest statistics for Great Britain, there were 17,500 fires in 2010/11 due to misuse of
equipment/appliances, and a further 10,200 fires due to faulty appliances/leads.
Always check any equipment before you use it, electrical equipment will be marked with the power
usage so ensure this is below the rating of any extension or adaptor you are using. Do not assume the
fuse or circuit breakers will protect you if you overload the outlet - these may have been replaced with
an incorrect size or type.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything
we do has been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and
charts, some through visual presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we
receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of
communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we
will do all we can to keep you well informed!
