Sharps in Packaging
We have recently had a Potential Injury
reported where a small knife blade was found
taped to the protective wrapping around a sign
panel.
This is the second incident in the past 12
months were sharps have been found inside
delivery packing. In May a set of snips was
found in the bottom of a box of uniforms
Both these objects were unexpected and could
have resulted in significant cut injury.
When unpacking materials, be aware that there
may be unexpected contents that could be
sharp or pose other health or safety hazards.
E.g. Insects or rodents could be inside the
packing or could have left droppings.
Examine the box and packing for damage or
signs of rodent damage before opening it.
Always wear gloves when handling or
opening deliveries and packaging – even if
you think the packing contains nothing
remotely sharp.

If you find unexpected hazards inside packing,
stop and carry out a LPSA before assessing if
it is safe to continue to unpack. Dispose of
sharps in the sites sharp box where available.
Remember to report the PI so that the supplier
can be notified.
