Winter Working
Please see enclosed a safety alert regarding working in Winter that was shared with us by BP.
st
Winter officially started on 21 December (Winter Solstice) and this means the weather is likely to be
much colder, roads and walkways are likely to be icy and hours of daylight are reduced.
Not only does this significantly increase the risk of driving to site, but also increases hazards on site.
Check the weather forecast for the area you will be working before setting out, allow more time for
travelling and setup.
Beware of any ice on site, particularly in the work area or traffic entrance. If the site entrance is icy or
snow is obscuring driver’s vision do not work anywhere near entrance – contact your line manager.
Beware of any hazards that may be hidden by snow, snow can cover trip hazards, kerbs or potholes
making them essentially invisible, carry out a LPSA before walking across any snow-covered area.
Avoid walking across ice. Ensure your boots are in good condition and have suitable grip.
Working at height in icy/snowy conditions is particularly hazardous. Ensure the work platform is clear
of all snow and ice before working and continue to keep it clear. Always use the van as a barrier across
the line of fire. If snow is restricting traffic entering site from seeing the barriers, stop work.
If you have any concerns about the weather conditions on site, stop and contact your line manager.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
