Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality Bulletin No 635

                                                   30 August 2018

                                                   Finger Injuries

Please see enclosed a safety alert regarding finger injuries that was shared with us by BP.

The HSE statistics show that in 2016/17 there were 7,812 reportable finger injuries in the UK, and an
additional 9,709 hand/wrist reportable injuries. Of these 17,521 injuries, 12,325 were over 7 day
           injuries.

As part of your LMRA, always look for pinch points and moving machinery. Follow the JSA and wear
the appropriate gloves, but be aware that gloves don’t make you invincible, don’t put your hands near
moving machinery and endure all plant has appropriate guards in place. Moving machinery must be
           isolated before being worked on.

Hand injuries are our most common type of injury, 47% of all incidents have been injuries to the hand
or fingers and this is why we insist that all site teams wear gloves at all times and specify the minimum
EN388 rating of glove for every task in our JSAs. It is never acceptable for you to take off your gloves
for any task, if you need additional dexterity for specialist tasks, fingerless gloves should be worn so the
main part of your hand is still protected.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
