MEWP Security
We would like to remind all crews that keys for all plant, particularly MEWPs must be removed when
the plant is not in use.
We have recently had a PI identified by a client relating to a cherry picker on site with keys left in.
The crew had left the MEWP in a barriered off area whilst they walked to the materials area to collect
the next fascia panels, they did not consider the short time they would be gone to be a risk. They
considered that as the MEWP was in a barriered area and that they would only be gone for a few
minutes that this would be low risk, however the time they were gone was enough for the hazard to be
identified, so could have easily been enough time for an unauthorised person to access it.
Whenever leaving plant, no matter for how long, remove the keys. If you are only going to be gone for
a short period take the keys with you, otherwise leave the keys with the site representative.
Our Xmo Site Rules (rule 7) details the requirements for plant to be secured, and the need for keys to be
removed. JSA004 also details the need for keys to be removed. Just because the plant is in a barriered
off area does not mean these rules don’t have to be followed, members of site staff / public enter
barriered areas regularly and could easily decide to “play” on the MEWP if keys are left.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
