LOTO
Please see enclosed safety flash, shared with us by ExxonMobil.
This safety flash shows some of the dangers that may be present even after LOTO has been applied. It
is common for distribution boards to be poorly labelled, meaning the potential to isolate the wrong
circuit is high. It is essential that you correctly test the equipment you are working on to ensure it is
dead, and continue to be cautious whenever working with bare conductors – even after isolation and
testing it is possible the circuit can become live at any moment; poor labelling, faulty circuits and timers
/ light sensors can combine to cause isolated, tested cables to become live without warning.
Always treat cables as live and test them immediately prior to touching them.
Also, remember that although electrical sources are our most common need for LOTO, other types of
stored energy also require following LOTO procedures, e.g. use of compressed air plant, and spring
loaded doors.
If you are unable to identify the correct circuit, or are unsure how to isolate a device, contact your line
manager immediately.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
