Accidents on Stairs
Please see enclosed bulletin regarding accidents on stairs, from BWF (British Woodworking
Federation).
On average around 1,000 major accidents occur on workplace stairs every year.
People are more at risk if they are rushed or distracted, e.g. on a mobile phone.
Carrying objects can also contribute to accidents as it can:
• prevent people from seeing the stair edges clearly, or any potential hazards on the stairs, e.g.
spills, obstacles;
• prevent people from having a hand available, to reach out for the handrail if there was a need to
steady themselves.
Before using stairs, carry out a LMRA – check the condition of the stairs, are they in good repair, are
there obstacles, spills or slip/trip hazards? Continue to carry out the LMRA as the climb/descsnd the
stairs, there may be spills/obstacles that were not visible from your initial vantage point.
Do not run or jump up/down stars, and always hold the handrail.
If you find any faults with the stairs (e.g. loose rails, damaged treads), report the problem to the site
manager and complete a PI form.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
