For health and safety professionals, stress has one potentially deadly effect: it increases the chance of
human error.
Xmo Strata has a clear ten point policy on stress:
• The company will take stress in the workforce seriously and help those staff who admits to
feeling overstretched.
• The company will train managers and supervisors to recognise the signs of stress.
• The company will encourage supervisors and managers to watch for signs of stress and listen to
staff views regarding the pressures of their work.
• The company will ensure adequate training is provided so that staff can carry out their tasks
confidently.
• The company will – where practicable – provide scope to vary work patterns and allow
employee input into how work is carried out.
• The company will ensure that people are treated fairly and consistently.
• The company will take allegations (and cases) of bullying and harassment seriously and
investigate them diligently.
• The company will encourage two-way communication.
• The company will prioritise tasks and, where possible, give warning of urgent tasks.
• The company will seek professional outside help if it is suspected that stress may be a problem
in the workplace.
We all have tough days from time to time and not everything that happens at work is necessarily easy to
deal with.
Everyone in the world of work occasionally has awkward customers, colleagues who are being
unreasonable over something or can be faced with a rather daunting workload.
But when that spills over into stress it becomes dangerous, and since we are constantly trying to reduce
accidents and risk in the workplace it is something which – as a company – we ought to be
knowledgeable and sensible about. That’s essentially what our stress policy says and we have supported
that since 2011 by giving all staff access to stress counselling whether that be for work related issues,
marital problems or personal things like gambling addictions. The helpline is set up to help you deal
with stress and talk about it in a confidential way – that what it’s there for and that’s why we have
invested in it.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
