Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 504

                                                 25 February 2016

                                               MID Bolt Protection

The bolts that hold down MID’s can become corroded over time and this makes removing the nuts
difficult when replacing the MID. Recently one of our installers made a suggestion to apply anti-
corrosion petro tape around the bolts to protect them.

The tape is a cold applied tape which remains plastic over a wide temperature range. It is non-
hardening and non-cracking. It is highly resistant to mineral acids, alkalis, salts and micro-organisms
and highly impermeable to water, water vapour and gases. It is composed of a synthetic fibre fabric
impregnated and coated with a neutral compound based on saturated petroleum hydrocarbons
(Petrolatum) and inert siliceous fillers. It is supplied in rolls so can be easily applied over the nuts/bolts
after they have been tightened and the locking nuts applied.

After a trial period we have decided to apply this to all of the MID’s we now install to protect the bolts,
reduce future risk of over-exertion and make future replacements much easier. This will be an added
value service and any cost involved will not be passed onto our customers.
