Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 242
M Mott – 21 April 2011
Electric Cable
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert received from Artelia.
This highlights the need to always scan the area with a cable locator before carrying out
any excavation works.
In the event of a cable strike such as this, never go near or touch the cable, even very
badly damaged cables can be live, and fatalities have occurred in the past due to people
believing the cable was so badly damaged that it could not possibly be live.
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
