Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 217
S Martin - 18 November 2010
Winter Working
Please see enclosed two self explanatory safety bulletins from Coteba.
Our workload normally increases dramatically in the last couple of months of each year,
as customers spend budgets before the end of the year. This puts pressure on everyone
to get the job done, which can increase the risk of an accident. This is compounded by
the additional hazards caused by the weather.
In these circumstances it is essential that the work is planned and all the safety
procedures are followed. Before you start any work, stop and consider the tasks – have
you got all the necessary documentation, tools and equipment to do the job safely? Is
the weather causing unacceptable risks? It gets dark early – are you going to be able to
see what you are doing?
The heavy workload does not change the fact that safety comes first – if you cannot do
the job safely, stop and contact you supervisor.

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
