Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 017

                                          S Martin – 26 January 2006

Sign Fitter - Fall From Height

At 2:15pm on Tuesday 24 January a 35 year old sign fitter working on a scaffold at a Telford
                                       th
cinema complex fell approx 40ft to the ground.

The man, who suffered multiple injuries, was replacing a sign on the side of the Odeon
           Cinema.

He was given morphine at the scene before being airlifted to Birmingham’s Selly Oak
Hospital, he is currently in hospital in a stable condition.

The accident has received considerable local news coverage, and closed Telford ring road
whilst emergency vehicles dealt with the incident.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have commented on the accident stating that there
are over 1000 people injured from falls from height in the UK every year. The HSE’s official
figures state that in 2004/2005 53 people died and nearly 3800 suffered a serious injury as a
result of a fall from height in the workplace.

We hope that the injured person makes a full recovery and is able to return to work and our
thoughts are with him and his family.

This type of incident, involving a sign fitter and so close to our Telford office, reinforces the
need for caution when working at height. Please ensure that you follow all procedures and are
vigilant in the use of your working at height checklists before carrying out such work.

As part of our commitment to achieving an Incident and Injury Free working environment, we
would like to remind and encourage all employees and sub contractors to address any
perceived unnecessary risk or unsafe practice directly with the person involved in the hope
that we can prevent this sort of incident happening on a site we are working on.

“let’s make sure that we continue to make our sites THE SAFEST by helping ourselves, our colleagues,
our customers and even our competitors by improving training, helping where necessary and
addressing any issues of concern there and then”
