Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 165
M Mott – 26 November 2009
Razor Wire
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert.
This highlights one of the reasons why these step ladders are being banned by more and
more contractors and better solutions found for most applications.
All of our SMS/JSA/JHA’s now detail specific guidance on glove selection for each
task/hazard and each team carries a checklist relating to guidance on Abrasion, Blade, Tear
and Puncture resistance of gloves issued.
Although Xmo Strata sign installers do not carry step ladders, the appropriate selection of
access equipment is still a significant task. Crews normally carry sherpascopic steps and
mobile scaffold towers, with some crews having van-mounted cherry pickers or MEWPS. For
most tasks, the appropriate access equipment to use is indicated on the SMS/JSA/JHA,
however for some tasks the choice needs to be made by way of a site specific assessment.
For short duration tasks on relatively even ground, sherposcopic steps are a good choice,
they provide a small enclosed platform with outriggers to ensure stability. Where tasks are to
be carried out over a longer period of time, or they are being undertaken on uneven or
unmade ground, mobile towers should be used in line with PASMA guidance and training.
Our individual safety is not solely in our hands, we have to rely on those around us to steer us away
from danger and warn us of potential hazards. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an
integral part of our working lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others.
