Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 067
M Mott – 17 December 2007
Housekeeping
Global Alliance have recently issued a notice to all maintenance contractors advising that they are
regularly finding waste material left on site after contractors have left.
This waste includes signage, bricks, shelves and bags of concrete, which has been dumped in the
landscaped areas or stacked up at the rear of the property.
The dumping of this waste not only presents a poor image of their company (and the company actually
leaving it), it is also dangerous, being a trip hazard, with potentially sharp edges, and can also be a
shelter for vermin. Waste signage stored on site is a particular hazard in high winds.
Any waste left on site is inexcusable. All waste must be disposed of in the skip provided, or taken
away with you.
We have a duty of care to ensure that we do not leave any materials or waste on site that could present
a hazard.
This duty of care includes responsibility to ensure any plant or materials that are to be off-hired, or
collected later (e.g. Heras fencing) are safely stored. Ensure any fencing or materials left on site are
appropriately located, away from fire exits, and secured so that they cannot blow over, or present a trip
or cut hazard. Ensure the site manager knows where the material/plant is and that the hire company has
been informed to collect it as soon as possible.
“let’s make sure that we continue to make our sites THE SAFEST by helping ourselves, our colleagues,
our customers and even our competitors by improving training, helping where necessary and
addressing any issues of concern there and then”
