Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 365

                                                     04 July 2013

                                             Recent Accidents Alert

Please see enclosed a self-explanatory alert that was shared with us by Aecom.

According to the latest HSE figures, there were 10,250 lacerations/open wounds in 2011/12, two of
which were fatal. It is therefore essential that you continue to carry out LMRA’s throughout the job
and identify any sharp edges or potential puncture hazards and suitably control them. Wearing
correctly rated gloves is part of the control measures, and our JSA’s all identify the minimum rating
glove that should be worn. Note the rating on the JSA’s is the minimum, and is subject to site specific
conditions, if your LMRA identifies additional hazards then the glove rating may need upgrading for
that site; always remember that the ratings are logarithmical, so a cut resistance of 2, for example offer
2.5 times more resistance than not wearing gloves, whereas level 5 offers 20 times more protection,
illustrated by way of the chart below which we support internally by using the glove checklist that we
launched in 2008, since which time we have worked more than 410,000 hours without a blade cut
           injury:-

                  Test Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
               Blade Cut 1.2 2.5 5.0 10.0 20.0

If you have any questions at all about glove ratings or suitability, please contact your line manager.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
