Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 360

Speeding
Driving is one of the most hazardous activities we carry out, and although we can attempt to reduce the
driving by effective resource management, it is an activity we cannot eliminate totally, because of the
nature of the service that we offer. In the past 12 months we have driven over 565,000 miles and spent
over 36,700 man-hours travelling.
We have put procedures in place to reduce the travelling by planning jobs, see “Bulletin 318 – Journey
Planning” (http://www.xmostrata.com/health/2012-08-30.php), however the implementation of this is
very dependent on the nature and geographical location of the work available.
We also have a policy to that all drivers attend a RoSPA Driver Development course and our driving
policy is comprehensively detailed in section 14 of our Health & Safety Manual and is accessible via
your Nexus Tablets (or on X Drive for the office team).
All drivers are required to follow the highway code at all times, and we have Top Speed limiters and
trackers in vehicles so that vehicles can be monitored and any vehicles found have been speeding
investigated.
• Speed is one of the main factors in fatal road accidents.
• In 2011, 3,267 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes where speed was a factor.
• The risk of death is approximately four times higher when a pedestrian is hit at 40mph than at
30mph, so please watch your speed when driving in built up areas.
• Fatal accidents are four times as likely on rural roads as urban roads.
Please make sure that you prepare for your journey, take regular breaks, share the driving if necessary
and are alert and vigilant. Your safety is equally important to us as it is your family.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything
we do has been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and
charts, some through visual presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we
receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of
communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we
will do all we can to keep you well informed!
