Implementation of Journey Planning
What is it and how was it implemented?
Historically we have manually planned journeys for site crews, but in early 2012, we integrated journey planning
into our XmoMan management information system. Xmoman calculates the grid reference of each site and crew
base, and calculates crews mileage in real-time as they are planned.
Travel represents a significant portion of our operating costs and planning helps us plan more efficiently, reduce
travel time, use less fuel and cut our carbon footprint. We also built in an automatic warning that would alert
journey planners if they were committing drivers to travel too far in one day.
Reductions in paper based forms
What is it?
An electronic notebook replacement for several paper based forms.
Our site based crews previously had to complete numerous paper-based forms for every site; some of these
forms are incredibly long and some are duplicated, due to differing requirements on the part of the company, the
client, the law etc.
Replacing these with an electronic form, sent to the office via the internet, has already reduced paper
requirements (and be more efficient, more secure, and reduce problem areas such as lost or damaged forms
etc). The forms are also subject to change, which means that crews must be efficient in ensuring that they have
the latest version; an electronic system gives automatic access to the latest version.
