Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 338

                                                  10 January 2013

                                                        Fatality

Please see enclosed self-explanatory bulletin that was shared with us by JCI.

This incident highlights the dangers from traffic when working on forecourts, particularly near high
speed roads. It is Xmo policy to use the vehicles as a barrier to the oncoming traffic, to reduce the
impact of a collision. However it is important that the vehicle being used as a barrier does not become
           a hazard in itself:

               • Leave a safety zone between the parked vehicle and the work area – even our large vans will
move when hit at high speed, give the vehicle room to move.

               • Park the vehicle across or at an angle to the work area, if this is not possible turn the steering –
parking the vehicle perpendicular to the traffic makes for a larger more visible barrier, and
prevents the vehicle from rolling into the work area if hit.

               • Ensure the brakes are firmly applied and consider leaving the vehicle in gear.

               • Look around and ask – what’s the worst thing that could happen?

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything
we do has been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and
charts, some through visual presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we
receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of
communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we
will do all we can to keep you well informed!
