Construction Industry Accident Statistics
May I take this opportunity to with you a happy and safe New Year.
Many workers and indeed motorists will have had a relaxing break, may be asleep at the wheel and
pose us additional dangers as we go about our day-to-day jobs, so please make sure that you are alert.
Prior to the festive break RoSPA released the statistics on the poster below.
Despite huge effort being put behind reducing accidents in the construction sector (that we carry out
most of our work), the latest annual statistics indicate that there were still 49 fatal injuries to workers
and an estimated 1.7 million working days lost to work-related ill health and it remains one of the most
dangerous sectors of the UK economy.
Over the last few years, we have implemented the mandatory wearing of gloves and safety glasses,
working at height checklists, PASMA checklists, MEWP checklists, continually try to encourage
continual and ongoing Last Minute Risk Assessments (LMRA), have developed glove and LOTO
checklists, made DVD’s on topics including knife safety, MID installation, correct use of barriers,
LOTO, Safer Use of MEWPS and LMRA’s. We have also developed in-house behavioural safety
training and initiated feedback from all of our site operatives on the content of our JSA/JHA/SMS’.
Whilst all these initiatives are implemented to make us think and be aware of the potential hazards on a
site and prevent incidents, they only work if you remain alert to ALL of the risks you face and
recognize that these are ever-changing.
Please take time to look at the RoSPA poster below and continue to Last Minute Risk Assess all
through your working day and ensure that you are aware of the hazards around you as they change.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything
we do has been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and
charts, some through visual presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we
receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of
communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we
will do all we can to keep you well informed!
