SWA Termination
We have recently seen in increasing number of Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cables that have been
incorrectly terminated into MID signs.
The cables commonly have the SWA cut off short and taped up, and the inner sheath enters into the
junction box with no gland.
Examples:
As the cable comes out of the duct and enters the enclosure without any support (cleats or fixings), and
is only protected by a grommet when entering the enclosure, this means the cable is only supported by
the terminals with no stress relief to prevent the cable being pulled from the terminals. This is a breach
of regulations 522.8.5 and 526.6 of BS7671 (wiring regulations).
