Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality Bulletin No 667
11 April 2019
Incorrect Wiring of Illuminated Signs
Please see below photograph of a blown letter on the “Jamie Oliver Deli by Shell” illuminated hanging
sign at Shell Newark.
We were called to investigate a report of one of the letters not illuminating, upon investigation it was
found that the 12V sign had been connected direct to 230V mains supply and as such it blew the letter
resulting in needing to replace the letter.
Please be careful when making connections to ensure that letters are wired into the transformer before
connecting to the mains supply. In order to rectify this it required two visits, one to investigate and one
to repair along with taking a full set of letters from stock in order to use one letter. We are aware on
occasion that the connections to the mains supply are made by others after we leave site. This bulletin
will also be shared with the Principle Contractors we will ask them to distribute to the Electrical
contractors to ensure that they check that there is a transformer in place before connecting power to the
sign. The cables from the illuminated letters run up the box section and into the ceiling void, so any
transformers would be visible above the ceiling tiles.
