Work Area Segregation
Please see enclosed a safety alert regarding safe working areas shared with us by Artelia.
It should be second nature now to barrier off your work area on open sites to protect from the public
entering your work area, but on closed sites it can be tempting to treat the entire closed area as your
work area. This is not acceptable, as you need to protect other contractors or site visitors from entering
your safe working zone. Always barrier around your immediate work area, leaving a safety buffer zone
(in case you drop something) even on closed sites.
Never work directly above or below other contractors, talk with people working nearby to co-ordinate
the works and question whether you can postpone that part of the job until they are finished?
Continue to carry out last minute risk assessments (LMRA) throughout the job, things change
throughout the day, particularly on sites where lots of other contractors are also trying to complete their
works. If another contractor is going to start work near you that may affect your works (e.g. they may
start using noisy equipment) they should approach you to co-ordinate the works, but they may not, so
keep a lookout for what they are doing.
If you are not able to keep your work area segregated, or feel other contractors on site are making your
job unsafe, stop and contact your line manager immediately.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
