Walking Is Working
Please see enclosed a safety alert regarding incidents involving walking shared with us by ExxonMobil.
It is easy to overlook the risks involved with walking at work, as it’s an everyday task that is taken for
granted. However, walking across work areas can have additional hazards, there are often uneven
surfaces, trip hazards, or wet/slippery ground conditions that add additional risks. Often you are
carrying materials or plant/tools, or are distracted by others on site.
When planning the job, look around the work area and general site, what is the floor surface condition?
Are there any steps or kerbs? Are the weather conditions causing potential slippers surfaces?
Carry out a LMRA, document the hazards, and consider what your can do to control the risks.
If you can’t remove the hazard, can you avoid the area?
Consider moving storage/van locations to avoid having to walk across slippery surfaces or to reduce the
distance you need to carry materials.
If the condition of the site is causing walking hazards to others (public, site staff or other contractors) on
site, notify the site manager and report it as a PI or hazard spot.
Remember to continue the LMRA throughout the job, as site conditions can change over time.
If you are unable to adequately control the hazards, contact your line manager.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
