Manual Handling
Please see enclosed bulletin manual handling incident, shared with us by Quant.
This is a reminder that manual handling is not just concerned with the weight of the load, there are a number of
factors that should be taken into account when carrying out any manual handling operation.
When performing manual handling operations, you should consider the Task, Individual, Load, and Environment.
Where possible the manual handling should be eliminated or reduced by adjusting the work process or using
mechanical aids. It is commonly understood that people are capable of lifting 25Kg, however this is very dependent
on the individual, the lifting position, and the type of load, it should not be assumed that 25Kg is safe for a one person
lift. If you need to lift a load that is large or awkward, (as is common for some signage panels), team lifting should
be used where mechanical aids are not available. When lifting large flat panels, remember that they can act as a sail
in the wind, and this can significantly increase the risk of manoeuvring them, particularly at height. Always measure
the wind speed and ascertain the wind loadings on large panels. The maximum wind speed specified in the JSA
may require reassessment depending on the site specific conditions – always assess the site specific loads and
conditions and note the hazards and control measures in your LMRA.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has been learned
throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual presentations, a nd some by
reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo
Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep
you well informed!
