Gas Monitoring
As part of our safe systems of work in hazardous areas and in compliance with GDS.08080 standards, we use gas
detectors on all Shell sites to check for petrol vapours when using MEWPs.
Whilst we were working from a MEWP installing under canopy sheeting, we recently experienced a gas monitor
sounding an alarm. A Bump Test had been carried out and the monitor was not faulty.
The work was stopped and it was noticed that the MEWP was starting to smoke. The hire company was called
and it was discovered that the head gasket had failed on the MEWP.
The use of the gas detector was able to highlight the hazard and as a result we were able to identify a fault and
stop the work before the fumes became overpowering.
Please remember to follow GDS.08080 guidelines when working with MEWPs or potential ignition sources on
sites. If you are not familiar with GDS08080 or require a refresher, the Xmo Strata GDS training video is
available on the Xmohub web site.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
