Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 519
9 June 2016
Driver Performance
At our HSSE awareness week, we all agreed that driving was the most likely cause of a serious accident
within our business.
Following that and as advised in Bulletin 501, we recently implemented a driver monitor system that is installed
in company vehicles and monitors how well the vehicle is being driven. This includes adherence to speed limits,
accelerating, braking, cornering and directional changes. Environmental factors are also monitored such as idling
time. This data enables us to ensure the vehicles are driven in a safe condition, and provide training or advise
where drivers are not meeting our required standards.
Since implementing this system we have seen a significant drop in the number of “events” logged by the system
as the drivers become aware of their driving habits and we focus training and TBT’s on the poorest drivers.
In February we were recording 2.16 events per hour driven, by April this had almost halved to 1.12 events per
hour. An event is a speeding, acceleration, braking, cornering or direction change that the system indicates may
not be safe.
