Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 522

                                                    30 June 2016

                                               Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed is an invasive plant that is
native to Asia and now found across the UK.
The root system is invasive and can cause
damage to roads, foundations, buildings and
           flood defences.

It has been identified on several service
stations on which we have worked.

It is illegal to “plant or otherwise cause to
grow in the wild” and it is classified as
           controlled waste under the Environmental
Protection Act (Duty of Care) Regulations
           1991.

Knotweed costs the UK economy £166
million per year for treatment and in property
devaluations and it is difficult to remove.

If you see plants that resemble knotweed on
site, report it and keep away from it. Even a
tiny part of the stem or root can spread the
plant. Do not store any materials near the
weed, as they can easily become
           contaminated.

Removal should be carried out by a specialist
contractor and disposed of in licensed
           facilities.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
