Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 470

Batteries
Please see enclosed safety notice regarding use of button batteries in hazardous areas.
As electronic devices are becoming more and more common in the work environment, we are seeing the
increasing use of them on the forecourt, mobile phones can now be used for paying for fuel, tablet
computers are replacing pen and paper forms, electronic measuring devices are replacing tape measures,
and digital cameras are everywhere. All these devices are battery powered and as such should not be
used in the hazardous area.
The Energy Institute have carried out a study in the attached safety notice that concludes that non-
rechargeable button batteries are safe to use in the hazardous area. However none of the above devices
will use this type of battery (almost all electronic devices will have rechargeable batteries) and so
remain banned from the hazardous area.
The recent implementation of pay-by-mobile phone on some sites is likely to increase the number of
people using mobiles on the forecourt. This is still not allowed, the pay-by-mobile should be carried out
from inside the vehicle. If you see customers using mobiles on the forecourt, please continue to carry
out a positive intervention and explain the rules to them.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding this, please contact your line manager.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
