Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 417

MEWP Security
In the past seven years we have had thirteen
reported potential incidents involving the
security of scissor lifts hired to carry out work
on site. Seven of these have been in the past
twelve months!
Eight of these reports are that the MEWP can
be operated without a key, and the remaining
reports indicate that the key was left in the
MEWP when it was delivered.
Scissor lifts can be potentially dangerous and
must only be operated by authorised, trained,
competent persons. By leaving the key in the
lock, or having a non-functional lock, this
allows anybody to operate the controls, with
potentially fatal consequences.
When carrying out your pre-use checks of any
kind of MEWP, always check that the controls
and locks are functional, and report any
defects. Reported defects are always
forwarded to the hire company, and we monitor
the performance of the hire companies in order
to ensure best service.
The increased number of reported incidents this
year has been discussed with our service
provider, and we have assurances they will
address these shortcomings.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
