Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 375
12 September 2013
Manual Handling
Please see enclosed a self-explanatory bulletin that was shared with us by Aecom.
According to latest HSE figures, there were 2335 major injuries and 28,328 three day injuries caused
by handling, lifting or carrying in 2011/12.
As part of our risk assessment process we attempt to eliminate or reduce the manual handling needed as
much as possible, however due to the nature of the work, not all manual handling can be eliminated.
We therefore ensure that all site personnel attend manual handling courses in order to learn the correct
way to lift and handle loads. We also provide mechanical aids and procedures where appropriate –
make sure you use them when available and consider the risk of manual handling as part of your Last
Minute Risk Assessment.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
