Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 376
19 September 2013
Vehicle Near Miss
Please see enclosed a self-explanatory bulletin that was shared with us by Aecom.
According to latest HSE statistics, there were 16 fatalities, 495 major injuries and 1,415 three-day
injuries in 2011/12 due to being struck by a moving vehicle at work.
As part of our processes we regularly stress the need to park defensively, with the van used as a barrier
to the line of fire, but this incident highlights the need to not overlook the vehicles already on the
forecourt, and the possibility of something unexpected and illogical happening.
As part of your LMRA, always consider the possibility of a member of the public (or even site staff /
other contractor), doing the unexpected, particularly with regard to driving. Plan your control measures
(barriers and site layout) to keep your work area safe.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works
for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
