Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 256
M Mott – 21 July 2011
Buried Electric Cables
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert received from Global Alliance.
Although this alert mostly refers to cables buried in the ground, the controls apply
equally to cables hidden behind facia, signage or other panels. Always check the area
you are working on to ensure there are no cables nearby or hidden that could be
damaged by the works.
Martin Rackley (UK HSSE Manager, Global Alliance) said, "The Central Europe
Middle East & Africa business unit of Lend Lease (CEMEA) has issued the attached
safety alert following several cable strikes. This has always been a significant risk on
BP sites and remains so. The control measures listed are not new to us and have been
part of our procedures for many years. But this alert serves as a useful reminder to
guard against complacency. The Buried Services Coordinator (BuSCo) referred to in the
accompanying Means & Method document will be the GA Principal Contractor Site
Manager OR a specialist pre appointed GA Contractor."
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
