Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 238
S Martin – 24 March 2011
Eye Injury
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert received from Coteba.
This highlights the need to plan your work and to identify hazards and control measures
you will need before you start the task. Under no circumstances should you start any
work before you have assessed the hazards and put suitable and sufficient control
measures in place.
In this case the crew failed to plan, and did not identify that they were going to need eye
protection, one worker then proceeded to work without suitable protection and lost an
eye.
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
