Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 236
K Parmentier – 10 March 2011
Danger of Infection
Please see enclosed two self explanatory safety alerts received from Coteba.
Both of these cases involve the works becoming ill after their hard hats became
contaminated after contact with their gloves. Although the risks at first appear small,
there is a very real danger of dermatitis from several of the chemicals we use, and from
fuels found on site.
Whilst working on site traces of these chemicals can be transferred to your gloves, and
then onto other items they come into contact with.
Always treat your gloves as dirty, and wash your hands before eating, drinking or
smoking. Gloves should not be stored inside your helmet and should be replaced if
contaminated.
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
