Asbestos in electrical fuses
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert.
It is extremely unusual that when working on our sites you would ever come across
cartridge type fuses, but if you should find one, especially if it is damaged, be aware that
it could contain asbestos.
The safety alert contains a list of all the known fuses that have been tested, but do not
take this as a comprehensive list.
There are four main diseases associated with inhalation of asbestos fibres. These are
asbestosis (a scarring of the lung tissue caused by asbestos), two kinds of cancer
(mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer), and diffuse pleural thickening (a non-
malignant disease affecting the lung lining).
The latest published statistics on the HSE website, for 2007 indicate that 380 death
certificates mentioned asbestosis, 2156 deaths related to mesothelioma and a similar
number are believed to have been from asbestos related lung disease; please remember
the asbestos awareness training that all Xmo Strata employees have received and contact
your supervisor, or refer to your notes if you feel you need refresher training.
