Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 168

                                         S Martin – 17 December 2009

                                                 Falls From Height

Please see enclosed two self explanatory safety alerts.

Both of these incidents occurred when a worker fell from height, and in both cases the
person was saved by their fall arrest harness.

We often hear how uncomfortable and cumbersome wearing a harness is, and I am sure
that the two people featured in these articles made very similar complaints in the past,
but the harnesses saved their lives, and I doubt they will be complaining about them in
the future. Remember, one day your harness could save your life.

Our individual safety is not solely in our hands, we have to rely on those around us to steer us away
from danger and warn us of potential hazards. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an
integral part of our working lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others.
